Safdarjang Hospital started as an American Army Base Hospital during the II World war. In 1947 it was made annexe to Irwin Hospital (Presently LNJP Hospital). It was taken over by the Central Government in 1954 and named as Safdarjang Hospital. Until the inception of All India Institute of Medical Science in 1956, Safdarjung Hospital was the only tertiary care hospital in South Delhi. Based on the needs and developments in medical care the hospital has been regularly upgrading its facilities from diagnostic and therapeutic angles in all the specialties. The hospital when started in 1942 had only 204 beds, which has since increased to 1531 beds. The hospital provides medical care to millions of citizens not only of Delhi but also the neighbouring states. Safdarjang Hospital is a Central Government Hospital under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and is receives its budget from the Ministry.
Since 1971 the University College of Medical Sciences has functioned from this hospital till 1989 when it was shifted to its new premises at Shahdara. The hospital has been running Post-Graduate students training under Delhi University since 1959. . The sheer magnitude of this hospital with abundant infrastructure, clinical material and highly trained large number of doctors would satisfied practically all the needs of an ideal medical college. Moreover, this hospital has the largest combination of all broad and super specialty medical disciplines functioning under a single roof. Therefore it was decided that that the first medical college of the new millennium be set up at Safdarjang Hospital.
The foundation stone of the medical college was laid by our then Honourable Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee on 17th December 2001. The college was named Vardman Mahavir Medical College after the Jain Saint Bhagwan Mahavir whose preachings though 2000 years old are relevant even today. The first batch of students joined the college in 2002. These boys and girls have since completed their internship and due to join post graduate courses.
On 20th November 2007 Shri M. Hamid Ansari our Honorable Vice President has dedicated the Vardhman Mahavir Medical College to the nation. On this auspicious day the Honorable Minister of Health & Family Welfare has graced the occasion by his presence.
The college is affiliated to Guru Govind Singh I P University. From 2008 onwards the post graduate courses which till now was conducted under the auspices of the University of Delhi would henceforth be conducted under the Guru Govind Singh I P University.
